32. karma – Karma is an action that is a cause of happiness or misery. It was a belief that the result of an action determines the course of future lives. There are two main schools of thought on what Karma is, the Jain and the Hindu schools of thought. There are two main branches of Jainism, the Smarthas and the Digtas, there are three main schools of thought within Hinduism, the Bhedabheda philosophy, the VedaVedanta philosophy and the NyayaVaiśeṣika philosophy. The Vedic tradition was ultimately absorbed by the Nyaya philosophy, in both Vedic and Nyaya Vedanta, the actions that lead to suffering or happiness are divided into two categories, virtue and vice. When virtue is combined with wisdom, the result is dharma. When vice is combined with ignorance, the result is adharma, the Sanskrit term karma means action and can also refer to the effect of action.
